레이첼 카슨에게 보내는 편지 Letter to Rachel Carson 좋아은경 개인전 Solo Exhibition, 2013 가끔씩 수첩 한구석에 그려온 작은 썸네일 스케치를 철사로 옮기면 좋을 것 같다는 조언을 듣고 철사 작업을 구상하던 어느 날, 달력 위의 동그랗게 감긴 부분이 나뭇가지를 잡고 있는 새의 다리 모양으로 연상되었습니다. 즉시 달력의 철사를 한 부분만 남겨놓고 풀어내 달력 위에 앉아있는 새의 모양으로 만들었고, 그린캔바스에서 주최하는 2012녹색여름전에 출품하였습니다. 하나 둘 늘어난 달력 위의 새들에게 '침묵의 봄'이라는 제목을 붙였습니다. 그리고 까맣게 잊고 있던, 수 년 전 레이첼 카슨에게 보낸 편지가 생각났습니다. 대학 새내기였던 2005년, 글쓰기 교양수업 과제로 교내 신문사가 주최한 편지쓰기 공모전에 참가했는데, 편지의 수신자가 이미 세상을 떠난 레이첼 카슨이었습니다. 레이첼 카슨과 운명처럼 다시 마주한 그 해는 '침묵의 봄'이 출판된 지 50년 되던 해였습니다. 1962년 출판된 환경고전 '침묵의 봄'은 DDT 등 유독성화학물질의 무분별한 사용에 의한 지구생태계 파괴를 경고하는 내용이 담겨있습니다. 조화롭고 아름다웠던 마을이 오염되어 새들이 사라지고 '죽은 듯 고요한 봄'이 온다는 짧은 우화로 시작됩니다. 50주년이 지난 새 봄에 레이첼 카슨과 '침묵의 봄'을 기리는 전시를 여는 것이 의미가 있겠다는 윤호섭 선생님의 말씀을 따라 2013년 3월 서울 대학로의 이음책방 갤러리에서 '레이첼 카슨에게 보내는 편지'라는 타이틀로 첫 개인전을 열었습니다. yoa Eunkyung's first solo exhibition held 4 March to 31 March 2013 at the Eum Bookstore & Gallery, Seoul. The exhibition is dedicated to Rachel Carson, American marine biologist and author of Silent Spring which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. One day, I visualized the round portion of spiral-binding as the leg of a bird that grasped branch, sitting. I immediately started to disassemble the calendar but left the last portion this time, straight rest of winding wire, made a bird shape that's sitting on a branch. I made several more, titled them 'Silent Spring' from the same title of a lady called Rachel Carson's book. 'Silent Spring' is an environmental science book written by Rachel Carson and published in 1962. It's famous opening chapter "a fable of tomorrow" is about a harmonious town polluted where no bird sang. The book warned about the indiscriminate use of pesticides, toxic chemicals destroy the delicate balance of nature. A letter flashed through my mind; a letter that I sent to Rachel Carson, buried deep inside the depths of my memory until that moment. In the year 2005, I took a mandatory writing course in my department as a freshman. One of the assignments required me to participate in a letter writing competition hosted by the school newspaper.Just having finished reading a biography of Rachel Carson, I decided to write a letter addressed to her.The hypothetical letter sent to an American writer who already passsed away was selected and published in a newspaper. The year 2012, when I once again faced Rachel Carson happened to be the 50th anniversary of the publication of the ‘Silent Spring’, as if it was fate that was calling. It was suggested that it would be meaningful to hold an exhibition in the following spring after the 50th anniversary of the ‘Silent Spring’ to honor Rachel Carson and her publication.
